British Pounds Appreciate as Britain and EU Pact on Brexit

  Pound Advances as Britain and EU Reach Outline of Brexit Pact (Bloomberg) -- A trading deal the City of London has sweated over for almost half a decade looks like it’s finally here -- eliciting a cheer across U.K. assets. With Britain forging the blueprint of a deal with the European Union, the pound strenghtened 1.1% to $1.3501 after the news of a breakthrough. It earlier rallied as much as 1.6% to $1.3571, the biggest intraday gain in more than a week. The yield on 10-year government bonds jumped as much as 13 basis points to 0.31%, the biggest intraday increase since March. “The tea leaves are shaped in the right direction,” Luke Hickmore, a fund manager at Aberdeen Standard Investments who helps manage 35 billion pounds ($47 billion), said before the announcement. “Certainly the market is buying into it.” Negotiators are still putting the finishing touches to a Brexit accord, according to officials familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity.   More bad jobs news: 885,000 people filed for unemployment benefits last week The US job market continues to suffer, and Thursday brought more bad news. Another 885,000 people filed for first-time unemployment benefits last week -- an increase from the week prior and higher than the 800,000 claims that economists were expecting. The latest figures, which are adjusted for seasonal factors and reported by the Labor Department, are particularly grim since last week's numbers were revised up to 862,000. And even before the revision, that week had been the highest level since mid-September. This was the fourth time in the past five weeks that first-time claims increased from the prior week. Meanwhile continuing claims, which track the total number of Americans seeking jobless benefits, fell to 5.5 million. But more than 20.6 million people have now filed for some form of government unemployment benefits in the past four weeks as of November 28. That's an increase of more than 1.6 m

Parents from Ohio face charges after they rented a party bus for their child's 14th birthday and had 60 mask-less kids packed inside, Ohio police said. On Saturday, the Mount Healthy police saw an unmarked bus drop 60 kids off at the Hilltop Shopping Center, which is located approximately 11 miles north of Cincinnati. The kids exiting the vehicle were not wearing masks or social distancing, and several fights broke out after the children exited the bus,  the police said in a statement . The parents were charged with "contributing to the unruliness/delinquency of a child."   Schalke extend winless run to 28, three shy of unwanted Bundesliga record David Wagner Schalke 04 are three short of matching an unwanted Bundesliga record after Wednesday's 2-0 home defeat against Freiburg left the league's bottom side without a win in their last 28 games.
