After watching his side let slip a four-goal lead in Friday’s 2021 AFCON qualifier against Sierra Leone in Benin City, Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr’s future with the team hangs in the balance.

Having raced to a 4-0 lead inside the first 30 minutes courtesy of an Alex Iwobi brace and strikes by Napoli forward Victor Osimhen and Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze at the newly-renovated Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, the Eagles crumbled and just managed to salvage a draw.

The result triggered reactions, with the Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick immediately calling for a meeting with members of the team’s technical crew to ascertain what led to the disastrous outing by the three-time African champions.

Angry fans demonstrated outside the stadium after the game forcing the Nigerian team to spend several hours in their changing room before being able to leave.

The Nigerian Minister of Sports and Youth Development Sunday Dare came short of saying the German mentor, Rohr, is not a competent to be leading the Super Eagles in a video circulated on social media.

“What transpired in the game where the Eagles squandered a 4-0 lead has given credence to Minister’s position that Rohr lacks the technical competence to manage a big team like the Super Eagles.

“The Super Eagles had gone four goals up in the first 30 minutes of the game, conceded one goals before half-time, only to concede three more goals in the second half with a coach who earns huge income from tax payers income remaining rudderless on the touchline.

“All I want is a competent coach, I don’t care whether it is Rohr or not. The name doesn’t matter, but does he have the credentials?

“Look at our footballers, they play in some of the best clubs in the world and coached by some of the best coaches.

“So if you want to coach a Nigerian team, you better sound because the invited players that are going to represent the country train under the best coaches, therefore, we don’t want a player that is more sound than the coach,” he said.

It has emerged that the bone of contention is Rohr’s ignorance towards best performing local players.

His selection of players has constantly be questioned.

Nigeria, though, still lead Group L with seven points and will hope to make up for their unexpected draw when the play away to Sierra Leone at Freetown Siaka Steven stadium on Tuesday Evening.

In May, top officials of the sports ministry wanted 73-year-old Englishman Harry Redknapp, to take over from Rohr. The former Tottenham Hotspur mentor laughed off the reports
